You are bidding on a full Plate painted or tinted; Ambrotype or it could even be a Tintype. Please let me know if any of you think you know what this is? Pictures are accurate. Beautiful picture of a young boy in excellent condition!! Outstanding case!! This rare Gutta Percha Union Case Full Plate is from the Civil War Era, it is referred to as a whole plate. This case measures: 9 3/16 X 7 3/16 X 1 ¼, and I believe it was made by Littlefield, Parsons and Company. Only three whole plate Union Case design are recorded, compared to an estimated 600+ designs for smaller cases. Only the wealthy could afford the whole plate. The front of the case is a brown geometric fan design and the back is blank. The front is in excellent condition without chips or cracks, the back has some rub marks and all four rosettes are present. It does have a problem with the bottom hinge, which I believe can be restored. Paul K. Berg considers this, as a very very rare case . That meaning, according to his book, that t are less than 10 copies known. Almost, never seen. This case is in the Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames Book, by Paul K. Berg.
