Up for auction today is another unusual item courtesy of the Memphis Redbirds and Marvel Comics. This is a complete set of limited edition comic books with a crossover between Triple A Baseball and Marvel Comics heroes the Fantastic Four, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, Ironman, and Captain America.This set includes all 30 teams in the Pacific Coast League and International League. T are four distinct covers. One cover, done for the Buffalo (NY) Bisons, features team mascot Buster Bison with Captain America and Ironman. The second cover, for the Memphis (TN) Redbirds, features the Hulk, Spiderman, Ironman, and player Rick Ankiel, as well as Memphis Redbirds mascot Rockey the Redbird. The third cover, for the Durham (NC) Bulls, shows the Incredible Hulk (as a pitcher in team uniform) with team mascot Wool E. Bull in the background. The final cover was a generic one done for the other 27 teams that did not get custom covers. It features the Marvel Superheroes with a variety of team mascots. Each one also features the logo of the particular team for which it was printed in the bottom right corner. These were printed as a game giveaway in a limited run of 5,000, so they will not be available in any shop. The comic book is 16 pages long, printed on glossy paper, and in brand new condition. This would make a great addition to any Minor League Baseball, Marvel Comics, or comic book collection. T won't be any more of these, and many have already been given away, so this is a rare opportunity to get one brand new. I seriously doubt you will ever see a set like this anyw else. The non-profit Memphis Redbirds Foundation is the first 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the country to own a professional baseball franchise (the Memphis Redbirds) and its playing facility, AutoZone Park. The foundation uses its funds to enable children to participate in sports across the Memphis, Tennessee area. The RBI (Returning Baseball to the Inner-City) program is an instructional baseball and softball summer program for boys and girls ages 6-15. The children form teams that travel throughout the city to play each other. The STRIPES (Sports Teams Returning In The Public Education System) program runs during the school year, and helps fund baseball and softball teams for middle and junior high schools in the Memphis City School System. The foundation provides many things above and beyond sports instruction. Although some emphasis is placed on baseball and softball skills, the primary function at each site is to teach young people teamwork, how to achieve goals, the importance of an education and how to become productive citizens of the city. These programs have given children a positive alternative to the dangers of drugs, gangs and violence that surround them. RBI also stresses the importance of reading by partnering with the library, Junior Achievement and other area programs. RBI is free to any child age 6-16 who would like to participate.
