This is a lovely , full weight 8 Reales clearly dated 1730 from Mexico City Mint in superb condition which was recovered from the Dutch East India Ship HOLLANDIA .This is rare as only a very few 8 reales with a full date were actually dated from this wreck .She sunk on her maiden voyage on the Isles of Scilly England , in 1743. This is a solid silver coin . It is a hefty26.9gms weight 38 mm or 1.5 inches across.This coin must have been within a clump of coins when recovered as the surrounding coins would have protected it from the ravages of the sea.There is no corrosion or porousity It comes complete with a detailed certificate personally signed by the salvors in a presentation box and with a 1970's postcard showing the salvors on the wreck site HOLLANDIA. On July 3, 1743, the Hollandia set sail on her maiden voyage from Texel in the Netherlands towards Batavia (Present day Indonesia). On board were 276 sailors and soldiers as well as a number of distinguished passengers. Under the command of Captain Jan Kelder, the ship toted 129,000 guilders in silver in the form of "pillar" dollars. There were also quite a number of 8 reale cobs and ducatons on board ! These were the property of the Captain, wealthy passengers and crew members .These were contraband as the owners intended to trade for themselves outside of the Company !! The read more
