The Focke Wulf Fw 190 followed closely on the heels of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, to became the last successfully mass produced Luftwaffe fighter of World War II. Designed by Kurt Tank, the 190A series was powered by a BMW 801 D-2 Radial engine, which produced almost 2000 hp, with boost. Range was an impressive 500 miles and top speed, again with boost, was 408 mph. Armament was 2 13mm MG 131 machine guns in the gun hood atop the engine cowling and 4 20mm MG151/20 E cannons in the wings. The 190A-4 shown , known as the Wurger, was flown by Staffelkapitaen Seigfried “Wumm” Schnell, of 9/JG2, at Vannes in France , 1943 . Schnell was one of the top Luftwaffe aces, reaching a total of 93 air victories. He was shot down and killed on the Eastern Front in February of 1944, while flying a Bf 109G. The original was drawn, by Kenn Berry, whose 35 year career in the art world has included writing, teaching, advertising photography, architectural model building and fine art digital illustration.
