Welcome to this auction for the impossibly rare 1898 E.G Hubbard, The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam. Elbert Green Hubbard was an American writer, artist, philosopher and publisher who lived 1856 - 1915. Hubbard retired in1892 and founded The Roycroft Press at East Aurora, New York from where he published numerous copys of the Persian literary classic The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam. By far the rarest and most sought after of these, published in 1898, has come to be known as, The Bird On a Post copy, of which only 670 were published. Lavishly hand painted on hand made paper with brown suede covers this book rarely surfaces onto the open market, indeed how many have survived the last 112 years ? These beautiful books in truth were fragile to say the least when they were new. This copy has a worn cover and the foredges are chipped. The spine shows signs of wear and is detached in places. There is foxing and soiling from the fragile suede covers and the endpapers are also foxed. There is also an inscription on page one dated 1898, {See photo No.5} Someone, before my tenure, has also thoughtful placed a coffee cup on the front cover, {see photo No.2} This is by no means a 'Mint' copy but I doubt that one exists, given as I say the fragile nature of the book when it was new 112 years ago. All in all though a very presentable copy read more
