3 Gallon Antique Stoneware Churn Riedinger & Carie Poughkeepsie - NY Ca: 1857 - 1878 15 3/8" tall x 7" rim x 9 3/4" middle x 9 3/4" base 11 lbs. - 11 oz. 7 Day Auction No Reserve Small 3 gallon salt glazed signed stoneware churn with large long tail bird in bright cobalt blue. You never see churns on ebay with birds on them. Variants of this bird are often seen on other forms some signed some not. This is a large design on a small churn making it all the more uncommon. The bird measures just shy of 9" from tail to top-knot. The design measures just shy of 10" verticallyThe churn has a uniform light tan color with even and very shiny salt glaze. The bushy tail bird is very shiny as well and no design fry. Clean inside and out. A few minor base chips and one minor rim chip. Minor hairline crows feet on both sides (see photos) minor hairline from rim down to impressed name in front. Hairlines are defined as being the width of a hair. They are very very very tight. Churn rings when wrapped with my knuckles. Includes a grayish salt glazed churn guide which has chips along its edge and rim as shown in last photo. Not original to the churn. Probably from Western PA. Small churn guides are extremely hard to find. My return policy on stoneware is simple. If you don't like it you don't have to keep it. Just let me know in advance that it is heading back my way. You have 7 days to decide to keep it or not. This churn is a rare find and in overall excellent condition.
