Secretariat is getting ready to be cooled out after a morning workout, by me, Jim Gaffney (red cap). This picture will be personally signed by me, Jim Gaffney, exercise rider for Secretariat, and the first to recognize the colt on the racetrack . It was taken by America ’s foremost Thoroughbred photographer, Raymond G. Woolfe, Jr. I will be happy to personalize the picture for the highest bidder. Secretariat was horse of the year 1972 and 1973 He set a new world record in the one and one half mile Belmont Stakes , winning by an amazing 31 lengths in two minutes and twenty-four seconds. He also set a new world record in the 1 st running of the Marlboro Cup, on September 15 th , 1973, in one mile and eight in 1:45 and 2/5. In that race, he beat horses older than him, and he also beat Riva Ridge, his stablemate, and the 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner. FACT: Secretariat came back after each major LOSS and set a NEW track record in his NEXT race, a feat unheard of in racing history. Secretariat was born at The Meadow Stable in Doswell , VA. His Sire was Bold Ruler and his Dam was Somethingroyal. He is buried at Claiborne Farm, Paris , KY , next to his stablemate Riva Ridge. Secretariat’s additional Statistics and Credentials Elected to the Hall Of Fame at Saratoga Springs , NY , in 1974 Won Eclipse Awards at 2 and 3 years old (1972 and 1973), Won Eclipse Male Turf Horse in 1973 Commemorative Secretariat 33 Cent U.S. Postage Stamp, November 18 th , 1999 Commemorative statues erected at Belmont Park , Elmont, NY., Kentucky Horse Park , Lexington , KY. , and at the Museum Of Racing , Saratoga Springs , NY . Only non-human inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall Of Fame, May 2 nd , 2007. Secretariat gave us some spectacular performances. He raced with 178 horses going 24 ½ miles in 31 minutes with an average speed of 48 ½ MPH, winning by 71 lengths, carrying 2685 lbs. He started 21 times, won 17, and was disqualified once ( Champagne ). Seven horses beat him in the 4 races he lost. He was the favorite in all but one of his races, The Sanford, w Linda’s Chief was favored to win. His highest mutuel payoff was $5.00. Three of his races were WIN betting only and three were no SHOW betting. He retired as the fourth richest money winner of all time ($1,316,308). "Big Red" really did not need his Tattoo # Z20669 for ID, as the whole world knew who he was. He was syndicated for $6,080,000. with 32 shares @ $190,000 per share. During his career at stud, he sired 663 foals, 70% of which started and 46% of which were winners. He sired 57 Stakes Winners, (8.6% of his foals), and 23 Graded Stakes Winners, three of which were Champions. Secretariat ended 1992 as the Leading Broodmare Sire. Secretariat was euthanized on Oct 4th, 1989, as after a debilitating bout with Laminitis, an incurable and painful degenerative disease of the inner tissues of the hoof. His death was front page news practically everyw on earth. The world knew it had lost something rare, and will always remember him.
