Up for sale today is a small transforming toy of Scott Bernard's Alpha Fighter from the TV series Robotech. It was issued in 1985 by Gakken toys. Robotech was an editing together of three Japanese TV shows: Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. While the distinct stories were meshed together to create a larger continuity, Robotech is considered to be an excellent introduction of anime to American audiences since for the most part, the pacing of the stories and the characters were not altered from their original Japanese versions and the episodes were not chopped up like was done with previous Japanese animated shows. In the New Generation of Robotech, Scott Bernard is the lone survivor of a Robotech Expeditionary Force sent to Earth to take it back from an invading alien species known as the Invid. He works to complete his mission, which is the destruction of the Invid center core known as Reflex Point. Along the way, he recruits a team of freedom fighters to help in his quest. The Invid are inhuman creatures, looking more like giant worms or insects that look maybe only slightly humanoid. Their ground forces on Earth consist of giant walking mecha/battle suit known as Shock Troopers, equipped with twin blaster cannons. Gakken had the original license to produce toys for Genesis Climber Mospeada in Japan . When Robotech came out in the states, the toys were reboxed and imported this country. They were around for about a year before Matchbox got the license and began to rebox some of the Gakken toys. This particular Alpha Fighter toy is the smaller of the two Alphas that Gakken produced. I'll admit it is not as good as the big Alpha fighter toy as elements of the toy are simplified and it doesn't transform through the three modes (fighter, guardian(gerwalk), soldier) quite as well as the big toy. Plus, in Soldier (robot) mode, it doesn't pose as well either due to the lack of rotational joints on the arms and hips. A lot of plastic was used in the construction of this toy instead of diecast metal, so it can also be a bit fragile if handled rough. But it looks reasonably good when done. Scale of this toy I estimate is about 1/72 scale, based on the size of the pilot figure in the cockpit (which ironically looks like the H. Ichijoe/ Rick Hunter pilot figure used in Imai's VF-1 Valkyries). I've had this toy since I bought it at retail. It is used, but it is relatively good shape and nothing is broken on it. Some of the stickers have come off, but that is all. The diecast metal feet have some slight chipping on them in spots, but it doesn't look bad. Gray pieces for all three of the landing gear struts and the gun are included as is the original instruction sheet. Box condition is okay. It has good coloring, but shows some obvious wear in spots along with slight wrinkles and creases (plus a small tear on top). The internal foam framework of the box is in good shape. I'm not asking much for it and I don't expect it to go for much. This would make a great fan of anime, Robotech, Mospeada or mechs in general. I suppose an ambitious person could use it as a basis for making a better looking Alpha in 1/72 as well. I just want to see it go to a good home. Even for these small items, I am shipping via Priority as opposed to First Class Mail International to provide some added safeguards in case of a lost package. I regret the increase in postage this will cause, but it is a safeguard for you (the customer) and myself. I see it as the best option. I can use First Class mail if you really want it, but I do not recommend it except to certain countries that I haven't encountered shipping problems with (Australia, Canada, Great Britain, France and Germany).
