This pottery is up for auction with no reserve and low opening bid. The small geometric details that make up the animals are precise and beautiful. It is signed Ramiro Veloz C. (Casas). His story is told in several places ( page 105 in the book "The Miracle of Mata Ortiz" and a feature on page 182 in the book "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz"). He is young man who has been potting for many years. His mother (Sylvia Casas) used to paint his father's (Ramiro Veloz Sr. who was a neighbor of Juan Quezada) pots until she died. In 1993, at 13 years of age, by necessity, Ramiro Jr. took on the painting. In 1998 his father suffered a stroke and he added the forming to his art. At his father's request, he began using his own name on the pots and dropped the "Jr." This shallow bowl stands approximately 2 1/4" tall, 9 1/4" in diameter, and 28 1/2" in circumference. Includes complimentary pottery ring. The pot is shipped double-boxed and insured. There are many places online to read about the history of Mata Ortiz and the story of Juan Quezada. I will just reiterate that each piece of pottery is totally hand made without benefit of potter's wheel or kiln. This handcrafting makes each piece one of a kind and any variations are a result of this process and should not be considered "flaws" or "defects".
