Victorian Gaming Table with four leaves. When open, the table top forms a unique and interesting "clover leaf" pattern. Hidden handle underneath pushes up and open the gaming table top to reveal the playing pieces. Included is an incomplete set of antique chess pieces and many poker chips. There is separate storage for poker chips and for chess pieces in the secret compartment.
This gaming table features a beautiful walnut body with maple inlay. Original finish with possible exception of the top playing surface! The leather pads on the top were worn and were removed. Intricate center trunk under the table top with an arm holding up each clover leaf with a "lock stop" wood swivel block. The trademark inside where the gaming pieces are stored is: George Hess Pat. Feb. 8 '76 George Hess was a New York City furniture maker active in the 1870's and 1880's. Furniture makers of the time often patented their unique designs and this piece is branded inside with his name, patent and date. Another table by George Hess, also with a hidden compartment, sold for over $2,200. This gaming table measures: 29 1/2 inches tall 21 1/3 inches square, with leaves down 40 inches with leaves open Known condition issues: see photos of "walnut burl veneer", playing pieces are fragile, some damaged or missing (photo available), leather panels removed previously Local pickup or we can arrange shipping for you at-cost. **Please Note: U.S. and International Shipping will be at-cost to buyer.
