Gangster Al Capone Engraved Spittoon
Up for auction is an extremely rare spittoon cuspidor related to Chicago gangster Al Capone. The spittoon is engraved with the following inscription:
“Happy Birthday Al. January 17th, 1899. Brothers Matt, John, Ralph, James & Albert Capone. Frank Nitti , "Mike De Pike" Heitler , Joe Aiuppa , Tony Accardo , Murray Humphries, Frankie Diamond, Johnny Torio , Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzick , Three Fingered White, "Rusty" Red Burns, Sam Hunt, Accardo Giancova , Charlie Fischetti , "Big Jim" Coldismo , Phil D' Adrea , Tony Lombardo. January 17th 1924. At the bottom it is engraved to Dr. Allen Reynolds: From your friend RED.”
This item originated from the estate of Dr. Allen Reynolds who was gifted with this spittoon by infamous lock-pick and reformed criminal Morris "Red" Rudensky. Rudensky was cellmates with Al Capone in the early 1930's when they were both serving time in the Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary. Upon his release from prison Rudensky began working for 3M. Red was hired as a publicity stunt to show that even a lock-picker of his caliber could not get past their latest line of locks. This new job put Red in the spotlight and he was featured in tv commercials, interviews, and newspapers all over the U.S. Rudensky was very appreciative of his new found fame and gifted his boss, A.E. Reynolds with the following spittoon.
Also included in this lot is a signed copy of Morris Rudensky's autobiography "The Gonif." In the book you can read all about Red's life of crime and how he was able to turn it all around. Red also writes about his friendship with Al Capone as well as other notorious criminals.
