You are viewing a very rare unique piece of gasoline history , a c 1910, all original ,Gulf doubled sided porcelain flange filling station sign , as they were called at that early time, measures 22 ins wide by 18 ins tall with a 2 1/4 ins flange, has on both sides in large black lettering , " that good Gulf gasoline manufactured by Gulf refining company, Pittsburgh , Pa., , for sale , has 1 /4 in black porcelain border around entire sign, signs wtg is a little over 8 lbs, in excellant condition, has some touch up on flange corner, and back , see picture, and around edges, in main body has only touch up in bottom of n on one side, the rest of the main body is perfect, now on bottom has maker of sign , Ingram-Richardson Co, Beaver Falls, Pa,. now the story gets very interesting , our research has found , that oil was discovered in western Pennsylvannia in a town named Titusville, that Col Edwin L .drake , general agent of the Seneca oil Co , discovered oil on Aug 27, 1859, t were many oil company,s at this time , the oil industry owes much to Karl Benz , a German engineer , who developed the first gasoline powered motor in 1885, now Frank and Charles Duryea introduced American,s first gasoline powered motor vehicle in 1893, and bascically that,s what started the oil industry, as we know of it today, then Henry Ford introduced Mass read more
