A Parkside Dundas ex-Midland kit-BUILT Brake Van with SPECIAL features: Converted by BR from a brake van to a mess van. Panels on both sides read: "Mess Van to Crane 1402". BR often converted old brake vans to such uses. The running number, M280663, is prefixed with a "D" and the vehicle painted in Departmental green. 'Wasp stripes' have been added to each end to enhance its visibility in service on the line. Overhead electric cable warning panels affixed both sides for the safety of staff. The grab bars are metal (not plastic) and the planked roof is 'canvas' covered (like most BR vans). Lightly weathered, with some rust below decks and to the metal look-out casings. A "Return Kingmoor" (Carlisle) inscription on one side, now faded (a previous allocation?). Nicely built, with the original (and powerful) brake-gear still slung along the length of the under-carriage. Sprung coupling hooks and individually sprung buffers, glazed windows and compensated axle-boxes. This model has been internally reinforced to resist finger-pressure. Runs level and true. Original box no longer present, but rest assured that the model will be very securely packed. What an interesting addition to a layout (or for static display)! David
