Paul Gauguin : A Sketchbook Raymond Cogniat with foreword by John RewaldHammer Galleries New York City 1962 limited edition . This is no. 547 of 900 copies. Text printed in Paris These Sketchbook facsimiles start at $225 and up online This is a very interesting project done by the gallery that then owned this particular sketchbook that Gauguin originally purchased in Rouen in 1884 and carried with him to Copenhagen, Paris, Pont-Aven, and other destinations. It was used off and on right up until 1888 when he left for Arles to join Van Gogh at the Great Studio in the South. There is everything from quick and preperatory sketches, to lists of the paintings in his own collection by other artists, and even a long shopping list for booze. The three books measure 4.5" x 7" and come in a slipcase. Two are backround/explanatory texts for the sketchbook; one in English and another in French -with the facsimile reproduction of Gauguin's sketchbook, complete with it's original worn look. All 3 are in good condition. The slipcase has some spots here and there on the one side, and a little edge wear, but is otherwise in pretty good condition. . My pictures aren't great but you can get some idea of the book from them I think. I will combine shipping for multiple purchases for this group of listings. Please pay within 3 days of auction end.
