Gauntlet Fantasy , and Sword and Sorcery specifically, owes its
existence to mythology in all its forms. Fairies, elves, wizards, giants, demons, and dragons all originated from some sort of mythology . The origins of the Sword and Sorcery genre date back to Conan of Cimmeria, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, and Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring, or the writings of Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, and J.R.R. Tolkien respectively. It was these works, and many others, that influenced games like Dungeons and Dragons, as well as numerous arcade games. Gauntlet is probably the first truly great Sword and Sorcery arcade game. And still to this day more than 20 years after its original release, Gauntlet remains a classic; a game loved by thousands. Gauntlet , made in 1985 by Atari, uses the classic arch types for its playable characters. Playable characters are The Warrior, The Wizard, The Elf, and The Valkyrie . With a top down perspective, characters make their way through dungeon after dungeon , fighting armies of ghosts, demons, grunts, and slimes. T is the Warrior , a Conan type bruiser who only needs an axe to solve problems. The Wizard can use potions to their maximum capabilities clearing rooms with the push of a button. The Elf is the weakest, but by far the fastest of the characters (which enables him to nab all the treasure). The Valkyrie is the most well rounded character, benefiting from the best defense, while being competent in all the other areas. Of course, Gauntlet is famous for having no real ending.
