Leather bound compendium of the 4 volumes (1883,1885,1888 [1891 later added] ) of poetry of Afanasii Fet (Shenshin), entitled "Vecherniye Ogni" (Evening Fires), which was belatedly dedicated and presented to the Imperial couple, GD Paul Alexandrovich (brother of Alexander III) and his wife GD Alexandra Georgievna (daughter of King Georg of Greece and GD Olga Konstantinovna of Russia) on the day of their marriage. Their children were GD Maria Pavlovna (the Younger) and GD Dmitrii Pavlovich, one of the co-conspirators in the Rasputin assassination. Alexandra Georgievna died 9.12.1891 three days after Dmitrii's birth, and GD Paul was executed by the Bolsheviks 1.30.1919. Original handwritten letter of dedication is bound into the book at its beginning and reads: "TO THEIR IMPERIAL HIGHNESSES GRAND DUKE PAVEL ALEXANDROVICH AND GRAND DUCHESS ALEXANDRA GEORGIEVNA FROM OLD ISHBETS, TO WHOM A HAPPY LOT HAS FALLEN, TO HAIL THEIR MOST AUGUST COUPLE ON THE JOYFUL DAY OF THEIR MARRIAGE. MOSCOW, PLYUSTSIKHA, 25 NOVEMBER 1890." THE IMPERIAL EX-LIBRIS OF GD PAUL IS AFFIXED ON THE INSIDE OF THE COVER AND READS: "BOOKCASE 29, SHELF 5, NO. 7". Afanasii Afanasievich Fet (b. Shenshin, but took his German mother's name) was a famous romantic poet of the 19c., whose themes were nature and love. Russian poetry texts. 6" x 9". 420 pp. Moscow 1883-1891.
