A wonderful anthropo-zoomorphic Dan Mask, (Danpome - Dan speaking people).

This particular type of Mask is called Ge Gon, - "masculine" ge and is associated with the Northern Dan and their neighbours.

Our example shows the recognizable Dan features of the bulbous forehead, wide slit eyes and high arched brows. The nose turns slightly upward. Face is wide. The mouth is replaced by the bird beak (probably representing the Hornbill). These Masks are from the Mau. Smooth darkened wood, simple but refined carving. Areas of kaolin around the beak.

Size 15"h x 8.5"w.

CONDITION: Some breakage to the headdress/beard holes where Monkey Fur headdress has likely broken away from. Condition has been considered in the pricing. Shows good signs of use. A well carved and fine example with some especially nice detailing around the eyes. Beautiful aged patina. Origin: Ivory Coast or Liberia. circa mid 20th century.
