The majority of the population did not travel and relied upon these publications to see what the rest of America and the world really looked like. They became familiar with the famous paintings in Europe's museums from the pictures they saw in these publications. Photography was developed in the mid 19th century and still in its infancy, printing processes were developed to reproduce these original photographs in publication for the world to see what people, places and the great art masterpieces really looked like. Some of this wonderful historical record has survived for us to study and enjoy today. We are offering a collection of Steel Engravings which appeared in one of these publication, in 1863. This is your opportunity to own and preserve a piece of history This engraving is over 100 years old, it is not a modern reproduction. Joseph Warren was born in Roxbury, MA on June 11, 1741. At fourteen, when his father died, he was a student at Harvard. He graduated from Harvard in 1759. After leaving Harvard, he engaged in the study of medicine, and began the practice of his profession in Boston. Warren stood alongside of Samuel Adams and the most ardent of the patriots. Warren participated in the famous North End Club, or Caucus, as it got to be called, which exercised so powerful an influence in the revolutionary movements in Boston. Eliot tells us that he drew up the regulations on the readjustment and enlargement of the Club in 1772, and that nothing of any importance was ever carried on without consulting him. Warren was elected a delegate from Boston to the Provincial Congress, was chosen its President in the absence of Hancock, at Philadelphia, and put at the head of the Committee of Safety. It was by his vigilance that the country was warned, on the eve of the Battle of Lexington, of the advance of the British troops. He was in Boston at the moment, was advised of the movement, dispatched William Dawes and Paul Revere to sound the alarm and acquaint Samuel Adams and Hancock, who were at Lexington, of their danger, and arranged the signal light on the steeple of the North Church. On the fourteenth of June, he was appointed by the Provincial Congress a Major General. On the battle of Breed's Hill, we are told Warren was the last in the trenches, and at the very outset of the retreat fell, mortally struck by a ball in the forehead. So ended this gallant life, on the height at Breed's Hill, on that memorable day, June 17, 1775.
