General William Westmoreland [March 26, 1914 - July 18, 2005]. General Westmoreland graduated from West Point in 1936, and served as a artillery officer during World War II. Before the war's end he was promoted to colonel and took part in combat action in Tunisia, Sicily, France and Germany. In 1953, he was promoted to brigadier general and in 1956, at the age of 42, he became the youngest general of the Army. In 1968, he was promoted to Army Chief of Staff and commanded 535,000 troops during the Vietnam War. Listed for auction is a commemorative First Day Issue stamped postal cover signed by general William Westmoreland. The cover is affixed with a metal/tin cachet which commemorates the 50th Anniversary of United States Disabled American Veterans and is postmarked Nov 24, 1970. The cover is affixed with one U.S commemorative stamp and is nicely signed W.C Westmoreland in black ball point pen. The cover measures 3.50 x 6.00 inches and is in very fine condition. The autograph is authentic, hand signed and nicely signed by this prominent United States general. We have listed general Westmoreland signed on three seperate formats, photograph, TLS and FDC.
