Gents Rolex Oyster GMT Master Perpetual Date (Boxed) History & Overview When it comes to watches, no name is more widely recognised than Rolex. Rolex watches have become the last word in quality, luxury and function, no longer just an expensive watch, but a status symbol in itself, and with such a prestigious and broad-sweeping history, Rolex watches, particularly vintage Rolexes are undeniably sought-after by watch conniseurs and collectors alike. Rolex began life in 1908 by Hans Wilsdorf, and just two years later, created the first ever chronometer rating on a wristwatch. Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law continued the company with an eye for precision and reliability, realising that in order for the movement to remain unsullied, a wristwatch would require a waterproof and dustproof casing. Thanks to this, the 'Oyster' casing was developed, with a screw-down crown in order to seal the movement in and protect it from any outside interference. Indeed, their advertising campaign of displaying watches in an aquarium in shop windows convinced the public and the popularity of the watches, as well as the prestiege of the company grew exponentially. Further developments included the 'rotor'-automatic wind 'perpetual' movements.Nowadays, Rolex are one of the most widely recognised & most highly desired watch brands in the world, worn by celebrities, actors, the rich & famous, Rolex is a name synonymous with luxury, quality and prestiege. The Casing The casing of this Rolex Oyster GMT Master is the famed 'Brevet' Oyster casing that minimises any risk of water & dust invading the movement. The bezel area on the stainless steel casing measures approx. 40mm in diameter (not including the crown - with the crown, the width of the watch is approx. 42mm from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock), with a recessed ridged screw-down back. The bezel is black with silvered alternate roman numeral and spot markes, numbering up to 24 to indicate the time on a 24 hou clock. Condition is excellent. The watch still retains its geen factory sticker on the back of the watch, which has been kept there. There is evidence of use, in that there are small light surface scratches, common to any watch, and entirely down to everyday use, but I can see nothing that is prominent. No deep scraches, dinks or dents are evident, and all the small surface scratches are not visible to the naked eye. The casing features the Rolex crown symbol in raised relief on the side of the screw-down crown.The watch strap is entirely original to the watch, and features a bi-coloured bracelet stap with stainless steel and 18ct gold bar links. The deployment clasp features the Rolex crown insignia logo. Like the watch casing, thee are a few light surface scratches, but again, they are very minor, and consumerate with casual use. The strap is set to fit a wrist size of 7 1/2 inches, but can be adjusted, and can be easily expanded to accommodate larger wrist sizes. Other details that I can provide of the watch are as follows: The number between the lugs (concealed by the collar of the strap) is 9431243, which dates the watch to circa 1986-1987. - The model number is 16753, the strap number is 62523H.18 (the .18 on the strap number is the indication that 18ct gold was used in the bar links)Overall condition is (from my personal appraisal), "Near Mint" - There are a few very minor surface scratches, consumerate with mild & infrequent use. These are invisible to the naked eye, and very difficult to spot, even with a high powered loupe. The most evident of any scatching is on the deployment clasp, and even these are minor.The photos that I have taken below, are all highly detailed macro shots of the watch, and I think they portray the watch fairly and accurately. - I would compare this watch to a 'showroom' watch at a jeweller's; one that has been taken out to allow people to try it on, and then returned to its case afterwards.
