This is a genuine 19th century watercolour painting signed 'J Bastien-Lepage' and 'Dinan Brittany'. I purchased it from an auction as part of a larger lot of very good quality, interesting drawings and paintings. J Bastien-Lepage was obviously a very great and sophisticated artist and this is not a sophisticated painting- I am not making any claims but it is conceivable that this a very young example by that artist- he did have a very early interest in painting and drawing and this looks like the painting of a very young person to me. The signature is in capital letters as is the signature of the great artist- so I don't know... I would love to hear form anyone with an educated opinion! The actual image within the mount measures 21 cm by 13.5 cm. The framed piece measures 30 cm by 37.5 cm. the frame is more recent than the painting with a velvet mount. It is of good quality and looks attractive. The painting has a little foxing as might be expected but is basically in good condition and is generally fresh.
