Genuine Old Pirate 1822 Spanish Colonial Mexico Silver Piece of 8 Real Coin NR Ahoy there mateys! This is a genuine, 8 Real silver coin, the famous "Piece of Eight", minted in 1822, in Durango, Mexico. Sought after by pirates and freebooters, this coin is somewhat larger than a US silver dollar. It is 90.3% silver and contained .7859 oz. silver ASW, when minted. This coin has a hole at about the 12 o'clock position on the obverse. It is covered in grey patina. Ferdinand's bust has a little detail, but is mostly outlined. Lettering is weak, and missing on part of Ferdinand's name. Date is weak, but readable. On the reverse, the crown have some detail, but the shield is flat. Rim is partial and lettering is weak Mintmark is weak, but readable. Because this coin is "challenged", I will not attempt to assign a grade, but will let you be the final judge of its condition. In 1822, the Augustin de Iturbide was declared Emperor of Mexico. The Rocky Mountain fur trade was going strong. These coins circulated around the world and were common in the early US. They were legal tender in the United States, until 1857. Was this coin in the US during this historic time? Maybe spent at a Taos fandango by a mountain man? Who knows, but it is possible.
