Up for auction is a terrific and rare leech jar from my personal collection. It is a duplicate for me or I would not be selling it. This is a french leech jar, third quarter 19th century. About 12 inches high. It is in 3 pieces. The main jar, which is white pottery and labeled "sangsues" (french for "leeches"). T is an inner container with many holes. This was taken out of the main leech jar so water could be drained and the leeches could then be removed for bleeding patients. T is a lid with holes for the leeches to breathe through. The lid has been expertly remade. It is a very well done replacement, fits very nicely and is virtually identical to what was t originally. One photo may show what looks like a crack in the front of the jar. I believe that was a dog hair! It is not a crack. T are some scuffs on the jar which you would expect with age. No major or unstable cracks of any kind. Some overall crazing. Again, what you would expect with age. The bottom has one totally stable crack that one can't feel in rubbing your finger over it. It is of no consequence to the beauty or value of this jar. You can see the makers name on the botom. It is "J Mourier and cie." Paris. I have collected leech jars for many years and they are extremely hard to find. This is a genuine leeches jar (watch out for fakes) and likely sat in a French pharmacy for many years. In addition to the jar I am including in this auction a rare French receipt for leeches. Dated March 17th, 1872. Sent to Mr. Friedlander "importer of leeches" 3 houndsditch London. This has a listing of the leeches purchased in neat script. These sell for hundreds of dollars but I am including it in the sale of the jar because they really belong together as you can see! I will sell this jar with a VERY reasonable reserve. Genuine jars sell for many thousands of dollars these days. Don't miss this rare opportunity for your antique medical collection, gift for a doctor, or dealer stock. Buyer pays shipping/insurance. Payment by check or money order. PA residents add 6% tax. I am happy to answer any questions. Please see my other auctions of rare medical antiques. As always I am looking for fine cased surgical sets, bloodletting artifacts, and art related to medicine for my collection. My website is Thanks, and good luck!
