DESCRIPTION OF THE COAL FLORA OF THE CARBONIFEROUS FORMATION IN PENNSYLVANIA AND THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES By Leo Lesqueruex 1879 - 1884 (THREE VOLUMES COMPLETE WITH ATLAS) Geological Survey of Pennsylvania Volume(s) P. This is a complete set, in 3 volumes as issued, of Lesqueruex’s classic and still standard work on the Late Paleozoic ( Late Devonian Mississippian Pennsylvanian and lower Permian ) fossil plants and flora of mostly the anthracite and bituminous coal fields of Pennsylvania but also with reference to specimens and localities from related Catskill Allegheny Conemaugh and Dunkard Group strata of West Virginia Ohio and New York as well as the Illinois basin and several of the Western States and Territories. The set is as follows: Volumes One and Two Bound Together (as issued)- VOLUME 1 - Cellular Cryptogamous Plants , Fungi , Thalassophytes (Part One); Vascular Cryptogamous Plants , Calamariae , Filicacaea ( Ferns ) with 354 pp.; VOLUME 2 - Lycopodiacaea (Part 1); Sigillariae (Part 2); Gymnosperms (Part 3) with 330 pp., 2 plates. VOLUME 3 consists of addenda, corrections and additional plates of fossil specimens to supplement the Atlas and the first two Volumes and contains 282 pp. and 23 mostly tinted plates. The Atlas contains 18 pp. and 82 plates of fossil specimens, many of which are tinted. NOTES ON CONDITION OF THE VOLUMES. VOLUMES 1 AND 2 (bound together in one book)- 8vo in original cloth, some wear to cloth per usual, split to cloth at base of spine along gutter, rear hinge cracked, contents are clean. VOLUME 3 - 8vo in original cloth, cloth soiled with wear, private library stamp on paste down, contents are clean; ATLAS - 8vo in marbled boards with quarter leather spine as issued, spine leather with torn gutter, boards weak and worn, hinges cracked, free end papers a bit soiled. The good news is the plates are very clean aside from a few finger print smudges mostly on their blank reverse sides. A rare set and very hard to find complete. This was, and remains today, the standard and monumental treatise on Late Paleozoic fossil plants of the United States. Complete sets start at $350 on the web and tend to run $500 or more if you can find one in a proper, walk-in bookshop. Priced to sell as I reduce the number of duplicate titles in inventory.
