General George Abiel Washburn (1827-1891), Union officer during the Civil War. Washburn was commissioned in 1861 as First Lieutenant of the 4th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers. In May of 1862, he was promoted to Captain of the First Connecticut Artillery, and by the end of June, he was commissioned Major of the 16th Regiment. Washburn was severly wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. In 1964 he was made Lieutenant Colonel, and on March 13, 1865, he was made General by brevet for gallantry at Antietam.A 23 page printed history/booklet of Abiel Washburn and his Descendants. It was compiled by William Lewis Washburn using notes left by his father General George A. Washburn. (Abiel Washburn was George Washburn's father). The text is no longer attached to the cover. The pages are discolored, but not torn. The outer cover is worn and slightly torn at the binding. Although two pages are missing, it still appears to be in a logical sequence. Glued to the inside cover is the List of Quartermaster's Stores, 1st Connecticut Artillery, signed by Capt. G. E. Washburn, dated 17th June, 1862. It is slightly discolored.
