Donald Rumsfeld made history as both the only individual to have served as Secretary of Defense twice (from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford and from 2001 to 2006 under President Bush) and as both the youngest and the oldest person to have held that office. Rumsfeld was both the 13th and 21st Secretary of Defense.
President Bush nominated Robert Gates, a former CIA director, to replace Rumsfeld at the Pentagon.
