Welcome to Antiques & Moore!
This listing is for a GORGEOUS George III silver coffee pot measuring 12 1/4" high, 8" wide with a 4" base and weighing l pound 12.5 ounces. This fabulous silver coffee pot is so fabulously embellished, it's hard to know w to begin with a description. This lovely coffee pot has a beaded band around the upper rim and around the waisted fluted center that extends up the curved spout as well as above the pedestal base and on the lower rim of the base. The upper body of the pot is decorated with slender scalloped panels that match the design of the shaped pedestal base. The lower portion of the body is decorated with a highly chased repousse design of ribbons and swags draping around the body with four beautiful chased leaf designs starting above the pedestal base and lifting upward toward the decorative swags. The ivory handles have a lovely shape and are a beautiful addition to the silver. This stunning coffee pot is clearly marked w ith the correct English hallmarks for the period. The lion passant, crowned leopard's head, date letter "S" for 1793, the sovereign's head duty mark as well as the maker's punch "R C" which we attribute to Robert Albin Cox. The lid is also marked with the lion passant stamp for Sterling. T is one puzzling thing about the silver mark for which I have no explanation. The design of the pot as well as the marks are all consistent with this date period, however, the sovereign's head duty mark faces left rather than right. Since the crowned leopard's head mark was not used after 1821, it appears that the sovereign's head should be facing right rather than left. Again, I am not an expert in English silver so have no explanation regarding this mark. The condition of this beautiful coffee pot is unbelieveable for silver of this age. T are two very tiny dimples in the silver just below the curve of the beaded center design, a very minor dent on the narrow bottom under rim of the pot that does not show. The finial may not stand totally straight which is really hard to call due to the dome shape of the lid and the small "ball" on top of the finial has been slightly mashed. T are no scratches or other flaws that I can find anyw on this fabulous piece. The hinge is tight and the lid fits correctly. The ivory handle does have the expected stress lines, however, the fit is tight and secure with no major cracks or damage. This wonderful coffee pot has obviously been lovingly cared for and reflects this care showing only the expected signs of gentle use. Silver from this George III period is definitely investment quality silver and this impressive coffee pot is no exception! I have owned this wonderful coffee pot for about 10 years and purchased it from a very upscale Dallas Estate. I am currently selling from my personal collection of investment silver so watch our auctions and eBay Store for more wonderful silver.
