A lovely 18th Century coopered George III oval mahogany wine cooler tub with original tin lining. The tub is beautifully crafted with numerous mahogany staves and secured with twin heavy gauge brass bands. To each end is a large original chunky brass handle which pierces through and is secured via an original circular nut. The base of the tub is solid mahogany and the piece has a lovely deep colour throughout. The internal liner is made from tin and has suffered some wear and staining, the base of this liner is becoming detached from its top in a couple of places so this will need soldering at the joints, there are no actual holes through rusting and it has survived remarkably well. There is evidence of a lock and a hinge that had once been fitted, these have been filled with mahogany many moons ago and i would probably guess this was used as a jardiniere. The tub has a waxed finish and the banding and handles retain a lovely patina. This would probably have also had a small stand at some point. Some chips to the mahogany, some internal discolouration, surface wear and marks but no expansion of the staves or splits or worm. A lovely piece which could have alternative uses. Measures 24 inches long by 16.5 inches wide and 8 inches high. Postage within the UK only is £10.
