This auction is for one beautiful RARE George Marsh OG Clock circa1840 in the condition as shown in our listing photographs. This is a "time and strike" clock that counts out the hour. It has an 30-hour brass movement. The clock is not running right now, but probably will run once the movement is cleaned and oiled. I will leave that up to the winning bidder.This clock measures just over 25" tall. George Marsh was involved in the clockmaking business with his brother-in-law William Gilbert circa 1828-31. Then Marsh moved to Ohio, and Gilbert continued to make and sell clocks for a time using Marsh's name. This clock was made in Winchester, Connecticut and probably dates to around 1840.Gilbert went on to create one of the top clock brands of the late 19th and early 20th centuries under his own name. There are a variety of theories why he sold some clocks under Marsh's name.The unmarked brass movement may have been a copy of the contemporary Chauncey Jerome movement, or could even have been purchased directly from Jerome himself.Marsh clocks are pretty rare, and this one is certainly worth restoring. I do not have the original hands but suitable replacements can be purchased on eBay or elsewhere without difficulty.
