Turned Ash or Maple Wall Clock Designed by George Nelson, for the Howard Miller Clock Co. GEORGE NELSON for HOWARD MILLER turned ash wall clock with black center face, black powder coated metal Roman numerals and white enameled hour and minute hands, and red enameled second hand. This clock is being sold as surplus equipment from the public library in Sunnyside, Washington, which was built and furnished in 1964. It was recently found in a storage cabinet, and we believe it is original equipment from the 1960s which was put away when styles changed. The model number is 04758 (see photo of label). It is 14" in diameter.This model of clock rarely comes up for auction, and when it does the clocks are almost never in such wonderful shape. The condition is beautiful, with no enamel loss on the Roman numerals or black face. The wood body of the clock is also in excellent shape. The finish is smooth and the wood has a warm, wonderful tone; notice the wood grain in photos from front and back. The only possible flaws are: one place in the upper left quadrant w a crack might have been glued (see closeup photo) which you can not see unless you are examining it closely. t is a faint line visible at two lamination joints on the lower part of the clock (see closeup of the number VI). They have not actually separated, and they are not noticable unless you examine closely, but we want to be scrupulously accurate in this description. Such slight separations are common in woodwork of this age (especially when stored in a dry climate). This clock is wired to plug into a wall socket behind the clock, and tfore has no cord. The plug part is a little loose (like the screwsholes were stripped), and the prongs wouldn't to go all the way into the recessed wall plug when we tried it at the library. I plugged the clock in to an extension cord and ran it overnight, and it kept time accurately. Unless you have a hook and a wall plug wired in w you want to hang this clock, you will need to remove the plastic thingee that holds the prongs, and splice on a regular cord anyway. The hour, minute, and second hands are all intact and are working perfectly. If the clock is held at an angle, it makes a slight humming noise; when it is held upright, the noise drops to a barely discernable hum, as with other vintage electric clocks. The label is intact, and says "chronopak" on the left, and: Howard Miller Clock Company Zeeland Michigan115 V 60 cy 3 watt The starting price is higher than my usual, but FAR below auction prices for this model on eBay ($300+ for a damaged model), and at the Rago Arts and Auction Center ($900+), as tracked in "PriceIt Antiques and Collectibles," one of the library's handy dandy research databases. Check it out--your local library may offer you access to this database, too. This would be the perfect addition to your Mid Century Modern / Eames / Danish Modern / Scandinavian Design office or home. NO RESERVE. Better living through eBay? Ya sure, youbetcha!
