Historic and rare co-signed document postmarked on Inauguration Day, January 20, 1981. Signed by two of the most important people present that day....Vice President George Herbert Walker H W Bush and deceased Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, who administered the oath of office to Vice President Bush on Inauguration Day. Items like this historic cover sell on sites such as historyforsale com for....more than $2,000. President Bush's signature alone on an Inaugration Day cover sells on that site for $599. This one also bears an inscription in Potter Stewart's hand writing stating "Potter Stewart, who administered the oath of Office to Vice President Bush." Potter Stewart autographs with inscriptions sell for $1,199. This is a significantly historic inscription...so it should have even greater value than just adding up the value of each signature. Everyone knows who George H W Bush is..... so here is some information on former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart. Stewart, a graduate of Yale University, was appointed in 1958 by President Eisenhower and retired from the Court in July 1981 just six months after signing this cover, at the age of 66. He was succeeded by Sandra Day O'Connor , the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Potter died in 1985 after suffering a stroke near his vacation home in New Hampshire, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. [ Most of Stewart's personal and official papers are archived at the manuscript library of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut . However, all files concerning Stewart's service are closed to researchers until all the justices with whom Stewart served have left the court. Thus, the files are expected to be made public following the retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens , who is the last sitting justice who served with Stewart. Stevens announced his retirement effective June 29, 2010. Stevens considers Stewart his judicial hero. However, additional papers do exist in other collections.....with this one soon to be in......your collection. In 1985, upon the death of Associate Justice Potter Stewart, Bob Woodward disclosed that Stewart had been the primary source for The Brethren . The item shown is the item being sold. Since there is not the possibility of any more of these covers ever to be made, this may be one of those that you buy, put in a safety deposit box and pass on to your heirs so they can take it to ANTIQUES ROAD SHOW in 50 years. Seller is a lifetime member of the American Philatelic Society. Shipping is free. TX residents add 8.25% sales tax.
