Shortyly after George Washington's inauguration as the 1st President of the United States on April 30, 1789, button makers of New York and Connecticut began to produce buttons to commemorate the historic event. This one depicts an eagle with wings displayed inverted, bearing a heart shaped shield on a breast, with an olive branch in right claw and three arrows in left and surmounted by a radiated meridian sun, inscription MEMORABLE ERA MARCH THE FOURTH, 1789. It is listed in Dewitt-Sullivan as GW 1789-4. The shank was lost in antiquity and two holes were punched thru to wear as it was meant. This is a great opportunity to own one of these rare Washington pieces. 34mm.
