Part of a Stunning Collection of English Antique Chests, Boxes and Trunks Ranging from 1750 to 1930.Collected on our most recent trip to England and container-shipped to the USA. Georgian Painted Chest c.1820 Richly decorated , but sadly damaged, this is a beautiful early chest. When we found it, we simply couldn't bear to have it stripped, because the damaged paintwork on the top is capable of restoration. The chest is decorated over a black background. The front carries a cameo of an Elizabethan Gentleman. The left hand shield carries three golden lions passant on a red shield âe" the symbol of the English Crown âe" with the words "HONI SOIT QUI" beneath. The right hand shield carries three fleur-de-lis on a blue shield, with the words "MAL Y PENSE" beneath. The fleur-de-lis was part of the English Royal Coat of Arms until 1801 when George III formally renounced the English claim to the French throne. "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" translates as "Shame Be to He who Evil Thinks" and is carried to this day on the English Coat of Arms; it is the motto of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, a medieval English order of chivalry or knighthood, which continues to the present day as the pinnacle of the British honors system.
