Part of a Stunning Collection of English Antique Chests, Boxes and Trunks Ranging from 1750 to 1930.Collected on our most recent trip to England and container-shipped to the USA. Georgian Painted Chest c.1820 Richly decorated , but sadly damaged, this is a beautiful early chest. When we found it, we simply couldn't bear to have it stripped, because the damaged paintwork on the top is capable of restoration. The chest is decorated over a black background. The front carries a cameo of an Elizabethan Gentleman. The left hand shield carries three golden lions passant on a red shield âe" the symbol of the English Crown âe" with the words "HONI SOIT QUI" beneath. The right hand shield carries three fleur-de-lis on a blue shield, with the words "MAL Y PENSE" beneath. The fleur-de-lis was part of the English Royal Coat of Arms until 1801 when George III formally renounced the English claim to the French throne. "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" translates as "Shame Be to He who Evil Thinks" and is carried to this day on the English Coat of Arms; it is the motto of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, a medieval English order of chivalry or knighthood, which continues to the present day as the pinnacle of the British honors system. So ... our chest is decorated in royal fashion! The lid carries , or rather used to carry, a vivid and lively painting of two full square-rigged sailing ships of the Elizabethan period, flying the cross of Saint George of England. The left hand one is beautifully complete. The right hand one is w all the damage is and is almost totally scratched away âe" could someone have actually let their dog or cat do this? The shields and cameo are surrounded by very pretty decorative leaf scrolls. This pattern is repeated on the ends of the chest around the beautiful original wrought iron handles. And it is repeated in elongated form on the front of the shallow drawer at the bottom of the chest. The base of the chest has a simple chamfered molding, which matches that on the lid. Both base and lid have decorative brass corner reinforcings. The front pair on the lid are damaged. The remainder are intact. The lid has lovely original wrought double strap hinges. Both lid and drawer have locks (we don't have keys to either); the keep is missing from the lid. The drawer has very nice iron knobs. The chest is beautifully made from single boards. The corners are dovetailed together, with gold painted bands down the edges. The drawer is also dovetailed. This is quality craftmanship throughout. As well as the damage t are splashes of white paint in various places on the chest. These could be cleaned off if restoration was under consideration. We could probably sell this chest for so much more if it was stripped and waxed âe" but it seems wrong somehow to do that. Bid with pleasure to own something truly unique! Approx.
