An outstanding large and early piece of English cut glass dating to the first part of the 19th century.This large fruit bowl of oval form is made of heavy leaded glass that is of superb quality typical of Georgian period designs.The piece measures 10 1/2 inches long, 71/4 inches wide and is 2 3/4 inches deep.It is cut with a fine sawtooth rim,with flutes cut down 1/4 inch around the outer edge.The bowl`s central body is deeply cut with interconnecting diamonds that are finely gridded on the faces and set amid a gridded background.Below this band,the bowl has a double stepped base and flat oval foot that is cut with a beautiful 16-pointed star.The glass is clear and brilliant leaded metal that rings with wonderful resonance.The restrained and simple cutting is indicitive of early English work,decidedly more refined than contemporary Irish work.The cuttings are crisp and sharp,and the adjoining clear borders deeply incised.This largely proportioned bowl may well have been the central bowl to a magnificent epergne at one time judging by the design.It is in good condition with expected table wear commensurate with an early heritage.T are numerous small chips to the sawtooth rim,most of which are masked well by the complexity of the design,though t is some loss to the points in some chipped areas.T are also some chips to the outer fluted read more
