Now this is a beauty!! Measures approximately 14" x 10" x 5". Solid mahogany with inset brass side handles and corner pieces attached with the originals screw fixings. All edges are crisp and keen. Inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon. Original base lining in quite remarkable condition for an item circa 200 years old!!!. No missing or replaced pieces. The lid closes perfectly square on what is assumed to be the original brass hinges. Original lock stamped with the mark of a known maker of the period and complete with a working key. Original slope clasp centrally located, indicative of the period as is the black dished pen tray. Small lidded section to the office with turned brass knob. The inkwell is I believe original and is in excellent condition. It could of course be easily cleaned but to remove the dried ink to some extent would remove part of the integrity and character of the item. An old dib nib pen has been added to complete the piece, green handle to complement the colour of the leather to the slope surface!! The slope platform is constructed of solid mahogany with thick mahogany veneer to the borders of the leather. The replacement slope surface has been professionally fitted and features outer 'blind' tooling with inner gilt borders and corner motifs. Both storage areas beneath the slope surfaces are in very clean condition read more
