RARE GEORGIAN Solid Silver VINAIGRETTE Hallmark 1810 NR Birmingham: SAMUEL PEMBERTON - Tiny - Superb Piece!!!! This is a very attractive GEORGIAN sterling silver vinaigrette that was made in Birmingham, England in 1810 by the illustrious silversmith, Samuel Pemberton. It is tiny - measuring 1 1/4" wide, 7/8" deep and stands almost 3/8" tall. It weighs 11.5 grams - well over 1/4 troy oz. It has a very elegant extended octagonal design with decoration to the top, sides and base. The grille is pierced and engraved in an elegant scrolling pattern. The insides of lid and base and the grille are have their original gilding. The lid is beautifully engraved to the cartouche.The vinaigrette was used, primarily by ladies, in the late 18th and 19th centuries. They consist of a compartment which contained a sponge soaked in aromatic acid - a form of vinegar and hence the name. The sponge was retained by a grille. When the vinaigrette was opened the aroma was said to greatly refresh and revive their owner. The aroma generated from the vinaigrette counteracted that from both the bodies and the environment This vinaigrette is in very good condition after over 200 years - it has the usual light surface scratching with almost no dings and no dents or repairs - SUPERB. The hinge works well with NO spring and the grille fits very well. It is hallmarked with SP, m, George III duty mark, lion passant (sterling silver assay mark), anchor showing that it was hallmarked in Birmingham in 1810. I have shown the hallmarks so that you can make up your own mind. Postage will be 4.50GBP both within the UK and to international destinations. A really RARE GEORGIAN vinaigrette from the illustrious Samuel Pemberton in superb condition after over 200 years!!!! Please note that the primary postage costs are for second class (or standard parcels service if the postage cost is over 6.00GBP) within the UK or surface mail to international destinations. First class post usually adds 50% to the quoted postage cost while airmail is typically double the cost of surface mail.
