This is a wonderful and rare George III era English sterling silver vinaigrette made in Birmingham, circa 1815 by Samuel Pemberton, who was a prolific maker of silver boxes and vinaigrettes in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. This fine little octagonal shaped vinaigrette measures 1" x 3/4" and is in excellent condition; the top lid has a pattern of hand chased leaves with a stipple work background; the rectangular shaped cartouche is blank. The bottom has a border within a border, and a rectangular cartouche with a vine and leaves. When opened, the box reveals a gilded floral open-work grille, which itself opens to reveal a very old sponge, fitted between the bottom and grille, which at one time was soaked with some sort of aromatic liquid. Although the gilding inside top and bottom have faded somewhat, it remains very much intact on the beautiful grille. T are not a great number of imperfections-especially for a piece this old-t are tiny scattered surface scratches and wear to the high points; the top lid has a shallow "line" across the surface of the blank cartouche; a tiny ding on the outer edge of the upper lid and a small nick on the outer edge of the bottom; the bottom itself has 4 or 5 small dings. The box does open and close correctly and completely, but the top lid does fall back (to 180 degree angle) on it's own after being partially opened. The inside lid and bottom of the box display the hallmarks for the year 1815 and Birmingham; the maker's mark is located as well. No cracks in the metal, no significant dings. A superb and rare Georgian sterling vinaigrette, which would make a great gift or addition to a collection. Email us with any questions. No Reserve. Enjoy bidding!
