GERARDO LOPEZ 980 Silver and Amethyst Necklace. ca. 1948-1950, Amazing, Important Piece. GERARDO LOPEZ was a maestro silversmith in Taxco. Most of Lopez's work was in silver, but he also made enameled jewelry which is very scarce. This necklace is an authentic piece of art by itself. It is an amazing design. This wonderful piece was crafted in the Mexican workshops which are famous for their great quality in the manufacture of this kind of jewelry. This piece was made in Taxco in the 1940's-1950's when t was a great production of this kind of silver jewelry. This wonderful necklace was inspired in Pre-Columbian motifs surely of clay stamps or architectural motifs. It has a rich cultural background like that of the Mexican traditions. This necklace was hand crafted which makes it a unique and also very detailed piece. Also it is made with a purer alloy of silver, 980. This was not common in these years, but we can see it in great art- pieces as the great quality that this piece has. This has the advantage that will not oxidize as sterling 925 does, and also has a softer patina. This art- piece necklace was created using moldered parts and all the final details were hand made. It is made out of eight pieces composed by seven silver beads, undulated forms and one rectangular carved amethyst stone. Each one measure: 1 3/8 X ¾ in. The central piece is bigger and has in the middle of it a rectangular amethyst surrounded by two of the lateral parts joined together; but only has seven silver beads. It measures: 1 1/8 X 1 ¼ in. Near the clasp it also has four small pieces, but this are only of silver. They measure: 1 X ¼ in. All the amethysts (nine) are in perfect condition. The clasp is made of a hook and a bar and is in perfect working condition. It measures: 16 ¼ in. It is marked as follows: LOPEZ, *980*, TAXCO . This piece is in excellent vintage condition, it has only some minor surface scratches and dents common to any worn vintage piece. If you are a collector of Mexican Pieces of Old Taxco, don't let this pass you by. It is in mint condition. Visit my other auctions maybe something else can interest you. I can combine shipping.
