Since that time the Mark II has gone through many changes, in design, materials, manufacturing methods as well as marketing. Now, in 2011, 44 years later, it is still one of the most popular and collectible fixed blade knives available. This is unusual for a commercially manufactured knife.The Gerber Mark II is manufactured by Gerber Legendary Blades. It was designed by retired Army Captain Bud Holzman, who based the pattern off a Roman Mainz Gladius.It has a double-edged spear-point wasp-waisted blade, and used a distinctive handle similar to that of the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife developed during World War II for the British Royal Marines. The Mark II was commonly carried by U.S. troops in the Vietnam War. The Mark II gained additional fame when it was used by Mel Gibson in the film The Road Warrior, also used by Robin Williams in the film The Survivors and featured in the science fiction/action movie Aliens in a memorable scene with Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton.
