This rare and seldom offered German Art Nouveau candlestick by the famous German maker Carl Deffner is in excellent condition and has acquired a nice dark patina as evident in the photographs. This candlestick consists of a combination of copper and brass and has a mounting box for matches (see picture). The box allows for striking a match from either side. Carl Deffner was born on October 13, 1856 in Eslingen and inherited the "First Metalwarenfabrik in Eslingen" around 1900 from his father Carl Cristian Ulrich Deffner. His father was the first to bring the process of silver plating to Germany from Sheffield, England in 1810. The candlestick has the factory mark on the bottom and consists of a Coat of Arms cartouche-crossed combat axes and the letters CDE.
