This old automaton has a fine solid brass movement with brass housing. It measures 9 ¾" high to the finial and is about 5 ½" in diameter at the base. It has a decorative band at the bottom which features a series of cherubs and foliage in repoussé and is elevated on three brass legs. The structural condition of the case is excellent but some of the feathers on the little singing bird are missing. The bird has three distinct movements - the beak opens and closes, the head turns from side to side and the tail flutters. When we purchased this device it was not operational, so we carefully took it apart to examine for the problem and found that when the little flywheel was "flicked" manually everything worked well - the bird moved properly and sang his pretty song. We oiled the flywheel, which was the only problem, then reassembled it and it worked for a few days, but then the flywheel stuck again. Perhaps we didn't oil the correct spot, or used the wrong oil, but the buyer of this piece will have to repair this condition. The key wound mechanism works well and it has not been overwound. No markings were found on either the movement or the case, but the switch label on the underside is in both English and German, or perhaps Swiss. Circa the 1940s or 1950s and sold with no reserve.
