German Diptych Sundial Compass- Late 18th ~ to ~ Early 19th Century Wood - with paper pasted to 3 sides - Paper surfaces - 4 or 5 color ~ Hand tinted, floral and geometric decoration 102.95 mm ~ 4-1/16" - - Length 63.14 mm ~ 1-1/2" - - Wide 17.10 mm ~ 21/32" - - height - lid closed 29.40 mm ~ 1-5/32" - - Compass Bowl 22.75 mm ~ 5/16" - - Magnetic fire-blue Needle Base Plate - Horizontal Dial - 8 Point Compass Card - hand tinted using 3 colors - Declination arrow approximately 20°
West of North 4 Point Cardinal Directions - In abbreviated German {abbreviated German ~ German ~ English Translation} Nord ~ Norden ~ North Ost ~ Osten ~ East Sud ~ Suden ~ South West ~ Westen ~ West Horizontal Dial with 4 scales: 58° - 50° - 45° - 40° {adjustable string gnomon - for user latitude} Apparently only one base plate string gnomon hole used - 40° Labeled 4 - 12 - 8 {am - noon - pm} - hour ring 4 times - inner and outer hour ring in Roman numeral hours the 2 hour rings in the middle are numeric hours - - all with 30 minute increments On Top of Lid - Latitude Table for 54 European Cities - mostly German cities, from 38° to 56° On Inside Top of Lid - Vertical Dial - hour scale - clockwise from top - 5 - 12 - 7 {am - noon - pm} with 15 minute increments - and an adjustable latitude scale {tiny holes for placing string gnomon} for latitudes: 56° - 54° - 52° - 50° - 48° - 45° - 44° - 42° - 40° - 38° With the holes corresponding to - 44° - 50° used the most often {based on the size of the hole} followed by: 56° - 54° - 52° - 48° - 45° - 38° Condition: Please review pictures - Closure wire broken - Missing string gnomon - Compass Glass / Crystal present ...but probably a replacement - Small slivers of wood missing at 2 bottom front corners - Wood and paper surfaces have wear ....scratches, nicks, dings, rubbing & bumping - Top corner of lid appears to have been stained by black ink ......an area roughly 5/8" X 1/2" - and this has spilled over the side - Colors are dark - Paper soiled and stained.....some places of paper have been worn down to the wood surface - some paper blistering - raised bubble like - inside surface of lid - but, over-all - its a nice sundial - For More Information about Payment, Shipping and Returns ---Please Read the Information On Ebay My World... or click on the - me - Check out my other items !
