PAPER MACHINE No. 7 (Papiermaschine Nr.7) By Alexe Altenkirch An original color block print used as a paper sample for the high quality paper maker, J. W. Zanders. Zanders paper was used by such German Expressionist print artists as Emil Nolde and Schmidt-Rottluff. Print is on semi-glossy stock and tipped onto a heavy grey texture backing sheet with gilt ruling around the image. There is also a plain stock backing board as rear cover and thiner front cover sheet with titles, with the back having a short history of the firm. Print measures about 11 x 9 inches, with backing and cover sheets about 16 x 11 inches. Print is in very good condition, the other sheets have some edge wear but no major tears or losses of any kind. .................................................... Alexe (Alexandra) Altenkirch (b. 5 July 1871 in Kreuznach; d. 25 September 1943 in Bad Kreuznach) was a German painter, graphic artist, designer and art teacher. Alexe Altenkirch hoped to study architecture, but prior to 1908 a university education for women in Prussia was not possible. She studied with her ​​uncle Emil Thormählen at the Drawing Academy Hanau, and later on Mediation at the School of Applied Arts in Munich.
