The Gewehr 88 (commonly called the Model 1888 Commission Rifle) was a late-nineteenth- century German bolt-action rifle, adopted in 1888. Sometimes inaccurately called the Model 1888 Mauser, the German Gew. 88 saw action throughout the world, including field service with Germany's colonial expansion, and served as a front line weapon for German troops during World War I until 1915. However, it was used extensively by the Turkish Army even through World War II. The design was based on the specifications of a German military commission looking for a replacement for the older Model 71 and 71/84 Mauser rifles. To keep pace with the French (who had adopted smokeless powder "small bore" ammunition) the Germans adopted the Gewehr 88 using its own new 7.92x57 (7,92x57) mm cartridge.
