German Lidded Beer Stein by Merkelbach & WickCirca 1900 1/4 L Style # 274 – with Inlaid Ceramic lid and Ornate thumb lift Pottery Stein Jugendstil / German Art Nouveau Body: Embossed floral design around the entire circumference with a textured background. Green and red accent bands below and above. Lid: Ceramic insert co-ordinated with the floral motif of the body with a similarly stylized thumb lift. Very good condition - no chips or cracks to the ceramic body or the inset – three really slight nicks, the worst about 1/16th in. (see close up photo of lid), to the edge of the pewter lid. The lid is affixed tightly to the handle - hinge operates well – just a little 'sway' in the lid fit to the top. To the inside of the handle there is ‘splash’ of green underglaze, more than likely an accident, done in the manufacture. To the bottom is incised the Manufacturer’s mark used by Merkelbach & Wick between the 1880s and 1921. To the side, in the area under the handle, is embossed the style number of 274. To the right of the upper handle join is incised the capacity indicator of ‘1/4 L’. Height: body: 4 in. ; to tip of thumb piece 5 7/8 in. / Weight: 1 lb. / Base Diameter: 2 3/4 in. / Top Opening Dia.: 2 5/8 in.
