This is a VERY RARE find a German soldiers M16 helmet.This helmet does have some battle damage down one side but also still has remains of its original paint on the inside of it. The helmet has the less common rear split-rivet which has a thicker head than the two front-side rivets. The rivets or lugs are the mounting points for the heavy brow plate that was designed to be worn with the M16 helmet. This brow plate was used by German sniper soldiers and those who were more exposed to the Allied forces. The rear lug was meant to keep the leather brow plate retaining strap from moving upward during use. The helmet was found last week during building work on a new house in the village of Ovillers which was on the front line for the start of Battle of the Somme on the 1st July 1916 A cracking and rare find from the famous Somme battlefield and the battle of July 1916.
