Authentic WWII, World War 2 German Officer's knife/dagger with sheath. Knife is in near mint condition, as far as I can tell. The sheath is metal with a pebble finish and appears to be perfect but needs a cleaning. In actuallity, t is a tiny crease in one side of the sheath, too small to show on camera, and a slight indentation near the crease which also does not show on camera. I found these by touch only and then by close up with modest magnification for examination purposes. The sheath has two metal rings for thigh ties, so I'm told. These knives were generally a favorite of the Luftwafffe, German Air Force, but this particular knife was a favorite of the Tank Commanders because it was made by the TIGER manufacturing Company in Solingen. One side of the crosspiece has the German Eagle, and the other has a smooth surface. On the smooth surface side, w the blade meets the crosspiece, t is a tiger etching (profile of the tiger body, barely visible in the pictures), and to the right of the tiger is the word "TIGER" in capital letters and under that is "Solingen," the city of manufacture. The reason that this was the preferred knife of the Tank Commanders is that the tanks were "Tigers" and t were 3 models of these tanks. Of cource the tank officers wanted the knife with the tiger etched into it! The last made model of these tanks was known as the "King Tiger" and this tank was the most feared by the Americans on the battlefield since it was so powerful and the armor so thick that the allies had little to penetrate it. Fortunately for the Allied forces, not too many were made toward the end of the war, and usually they were defeated by the simple fact that they ran out of gas since they were incredible gas guzzlers and the Germans were unable to refule them in the field toward the end of the war. The handle has an antique ivory finish to it, but I am fairly certain that it is plastic. I have yet to ever see a knife of this type with a real ivory handle. The pommel (top of handle) has an intricate leaf design, as do the bands holding the rings to the sheath. A magnificent addition for the collector who wants the authentic items in his collection. I have been asked if t is a swastika below the eagle. T is none, and I am unable to determine if t ever was one t Will ship to Europe with extra handling and shipping charges. The blade of this dagger is 10 inches long, 25.4 cm. The entire dagger is 14 7/8 inches, 37.78 cm. The knife and sheath together, when the knife is in the sheath, measures 15 7/8 inches, 40.31 cm. The leaf design appears to be oak leaves, and this is shown 4 times, twice on the sheath banded w the rings are, once just below and around the base of the pommel, and once in a band around the handle just above w the handle meets the cross-piece. The pommel piece can be unscrewed and the pommel, handle and oak leaf band above the crosspiece can be separated from the blade. The upper side edge of the sheath has a tiny screw on one side, and a tiny opening on the other. I am unable to tell if the opening is for a small screw or if the opening was designed to let moisture evaporate from the sheath. You must be 18 years old or older to buy this item.
