Pewter Lidded Stein or Pitcher hallmarked by handle and in the center of the bottom inside that was purchased in Berlin Germany in 1962 by an American who married a German woman and worked at Stars & Stripes Europe till his retirement. I have the stein from the couples daughter who is married to my brother (they still live in Germany). I called the stein German but I don't know the exact origin, although I'm sure it is European. Anyway I am no expert at all on steins or pewter. All my sister-in-law knew about it was it was bought in Berlin in 1962 and that her parents believed the stein to be a genuine very early antique. I have shown lots of pictures including what turned out to be an excellent shot of the hallmarks that are just to the left of the top of the handle and the one that is centered inside on the bottom (this is the Hourglass flanked by a W and E) . I will say that I have found pictures of another stein almost exactly like this one as far as the construction of the handle, thumbtab and general shape and size. That one was English and dated from around 1809 according to the book I saw. Size- It measures 8 1/4" to top of the thumb tab. The bottom base is 5 5/8" across. The mouth is about 5" across. Condition- Very good condition with lid being a bit loose fitting on the hinge pin. Otherwise a shallow, minor dent near the bottom on the opposite side from the handle. I see no sign or repairs. I am selling what is pictured , I cannot guarantee it is an original circa 1820 stein because I am not an expert. However I believe it is right based on my limited research (I do not have a source to look up these hallmarks however). If anybody out t wants to express an opinion send it in the form of a question and I will post all the comments either pro or con, unless the commentator requests I not post it.
