This is a nice WWI German pill box cap. I purchased this about 20 years ago from Jacques Knoles Jacobsen Jr in New York. Some of you old timers may remember him, put out a catalogue about 6 times a year filled with great stuff. Had little clippings of photos of each item near description. Anyway, I bought this as an original, but over many years, have now discovered that I truly believe this was made in the 1920's for the filming of the movie All Quiet on the Western Front (the first one). I have seen one another identical hat come for sale advertised as a prop for that movie and this one is identical to that. Having said that, this may still be an original unisued WWI vintage cap with no issue markings and a hand written size. The cockades on front are original of the period, but they affix with prongs unlike the correct sewn on type. If this was remade for the movie, it is correct in every respect (I have antoher original). The stone grey wool body is coarser material than the doe skin type red band which is correct, and the heavy weight white cotton muslin lining is exactly like all originals I have seen. When I bought the hat, it was fiull of mud and I gently washed it out with a mild deterrgent. to keep the mold from growing The white lining DOES NOT GLOW, and never has, but you can just make out the detergent remaining on top. read more
