Welcome. Up for bids is this nice authentic, German WW 1 Navy ( Kriegsmarine ) Lion Head Officer's Sword .
About the item : Imperial Kriegsmarine ( Navy ) Lion Head Officer's Sword. This Naval saber is rather rare and represents a late 19th century, early 20th century production for the first official German Naval swords. During the Imperial years, in the 19th century, the Germans copied the British designs and this sword resembles British ones of the same period. This lion head is nicely detailed and is depicted without colored glass eyes. The lion has a slightly open mouth and has a pleasing look to his face which is almost dog-like. The whiskers and brows are all t, and t is a nice mane which runs backward to about 25% of the area down the back strap. The rest of this back strap area is left plain. The basket hilt features the traditional naval style swirls in the design. The lower portion of the basket depicts a vertical Imperial crown positioned over a fouled anchor. This crown design has its edges slightly tipped. The basket hilt ends in the traditional small teardrop. The hilt is cast of the finest brass, but it has not been cleaned in many years and bears a desirable patina. The shark skin grip is fine, but for a few chips and t (please, take a look at the pictures). It is tightly wrapped with its original triple brass wire, the center being twisted. As usual with German Navy Swords of this type, the reverse hilt has a folding blade lock which still works excellently. The blade is a twenty-nine inch curved style with a small quillback design at the end (once again, please take a look at the pictures), it was originally decorated with designs of the Damascus type, but they somehow vanished through the course of time. Although t could be a chance to save some of them through cleaning, something I never attempted. As of now, the designs on the blade are only faintly visible. You can usually find the manufacturer's name on the blade ricasso (the blade flat near the crossguard). This particular example bears no maker mark(s). The condition of this saber is good, some aging shows and t, the blade has of course tarnished through the course of time. T is no scabbard coming with this sword. Still, this is an item that commands much attention, one that will inexorably add interest to any collection. This type of sword was also kept all through WWII, although during the later production the Imperial Crown was replaced by another design.
